DECORATED YOUTH

HXXS

Photography and Interview by Drew Reynolds.

HXXS is a glitchy pop duo comprised of Jeannie Colleene and Gavin Neves that have just released their debut album Year of the Witch via Captured Tracks in October. Though their album was initially recorded during a six month tour spent living out of their van their the hard drive containing these roadside recordings were stolen back in 2017. They had to completely re-record the entire LP on a time crunch, largely from memory.

If you could have anyone REMIX “Year of the Witch” who would it be & why?

The Knife, I mean at this point, what the hell would that sound like? Of course there are others, but that’s a big one. Also would love to hear what Moor Mother would do to this thing. Have such immense respect for what she does.

How was it working with Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio)?

Kyp is a very close friend, and just through being his friend it’s a lot like an ongoing collaboration. It was incredible to work with him and feature him on this record. In some ways it was very full circle in being inspired by him and his other projects to hearing him sing lyrics written that were influenced by his body of work. A true trip/time travel.

Who are some of your main influences musically & visually?

Musically our influences are all over the place, but we are heavily influenced by The Knife, The Blood Brothers, The Locust, Perfect Pussy, Moor Mother, Liars, just to name a few. Visually we haven’t really settled on any one aesthetic. If a venue provides lights, cool. If not we just stick to the raw analog look of our frayed wires and gear set table top while we summon the spirits out of it. I think in that way it remains jarring and very true to our hardcore influences as just another way to make music.

What’s your fav track to play live & what makes it so?

Jeannie: “Hard to Tell” is an easy favorite, it gets people moving and is a blast to play live.

Gavin: “Ful Health” and “Build a Fire” are two of my favorites to play, but really every track off the record is dear to my heart. playing them have different meanings and they shape and shift each night that is always beyond our control and that’s part of my love for them. Hard To Tell is definitely a big favorite too.

How has your tour been thus far, and what venue makes your adrenaline soar?

Tour has been so much fun so far! We really enjoy being on the road, its stimulating, exhausting, and a great cardio workout. Honestly no particular venue has made our adrenaline soar, more so, every night being in front of both new people and people that have been coming to shows for years is what spikes our adrenaline in such a positive way. People showing out for it and what it means to them is just so huge to us.
