It’s mid-January and it feels “too late” to release an end of year article from the year prior, but in late December I came up with the idea to ask these artists to do short interviews alongside these fav song picks… So, as they say it’s better late than never, right? Right? Anyway, here’s the (most tardy) annual list of my favorite music I heard and got obsessed with in the last year. Yes, some of these songs were “released” before 2023, but I still think it’s essential we highlight music we dig instead of focusing on release date.
Thanks to all the artists, managers, PR people out there who took part in these last min Q&A’s. And artists, thank YOU for making the tunes that make people feel alive!

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Haywire.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Carousel” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
I remember when we were recording and Cat come up with such a great guitar line to go along with the rest of the track, adding to the tongue in cheek, topsy-turviness of the idea I had come up with. We were recording the record in a huge warehouse full of all kinds of the objects the owner had collected— giant, intricately carved wardrobes, swords, you name it. It felt like a fun house, so it was the perfect place to record a song about feeling overwhelmed and attempting to ground yourself in a mad world in an environment like that. I still love the song and I’m so proud of what we did. I trust Cat and Melissa implicitly with any idea I bring to the table. So, hearing it now, though I may not be emotionally linked the to the lyrical content anymore, I feel so thrilled to hear what we came up with together with only bringing a vocal melody and a bassline to them.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
I’m deeply in love with a trash picked acoustic guitar that my friend Evan Bernard glued the neck back on. Evan and Cat gave to me as a gift a decade ago. I still write everything on it.

O gosh ya know, I’m always up to something and down for everything when it comes to music. While I’m consistently writing for my first love Amanda X, I’ve been using my free time lending a hand for other friend’s projects. Been having a lot of fun playing in a post punk no wave band Eraser and my friend Will McAndrew’s new project that has yet to be named.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
Can’t get over the soundtracks for ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ and ‘The Curse’. One of my latent dreams is writing music for movies and tv. Lapvona by Otessa Moshfegh was my favorite book this year if you’re into dark fantasy with a punch. Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
Not really a fan of this iteration of the internet and social media in general but would have to say Instagram is usually the mountain top I’ll shout from. I prefer to make connections in real life. Philly is beautiful for that; we are all so connected and know each other even if we aren’t playing or doing the same sort of things. Creative inspiration is something that comes from wherever I’m at. It comes and goes in waves. I think of little melodies and sing them into my phone all the time. That being said, I have a small group of people who I’ve recorded or played with and two friends who don’t play music at all. I’ll send demos to them once I flesh those ideas out into longer than a 10 second clip of me singing in my truck. It’s always a nice spread of feedback, my favorite responses are from friends who don’t play music at all. It’s a much more informative take on whatever I’m working on.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Put out a great record with Cat and Melissa! I can’t wait to see what we do this year.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
Joined my boyfriend and our friends on tour in the UK, got to the see Scotland for the first time. It was incredible.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Making more music, of course.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Busy.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Five-Course Meal” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
I remember having a lot of fun recording Five-Course Meal, especially doing vocals. Sometimes Mo and I get in a goofy mood and I’ll start hamming it up with ad libs. And sometimes those ad libs just might make it into the final cut.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
Probably the Diamond vibrato pedal that’s in Trash Treasury, one of the studios we recorded the album in. It’s used a few times on the record and I also used it on the latest Diners record, Domino.

Working on Domino with Mo and Blue (Diners) or working on my sister’s project Soursop. She’s a hell of a songwriter and she just released her first EP!
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
Not necessarily a new discovery, but definitely a new obsession with the Apples in Stereo this year.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I feel so lucky that I have so many god damn talented friends who inspire me. I would say I’m most often bouncing new ideas or songs off Mo. As for social media, I don’t know. It always feels like something I have to do and not really want to do. I go on Twitter a lot, but mostly just to keep up with hockey news/rumors.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Finishing and releasing my first full-length record.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
100% Japan. Went for a little trip at the end of the year with my partner and friends to visit some other friends who live there. Tokyo was wild and I even got to play a show!!
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
I really want to make a Bory tour happen!

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Vertical.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Tracemaker” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
I think finally doing something after being in lockdown was a great feeling, just being able to spend time with the band to work on the record [Good Time] was a lot of fun. We were so busy up until recently that we hadn’t had a chance to reflect on the record. Now that we can look back at the progress we’ve made there is a huge sense of gratification and I feel like it will stand the test of time.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
I used a 1970s Mu-Tron Biphase pedal on “Speed Jesus” that sounded amazing. They’re like 2-4 thousand dollars which is insane. Nick’s favorite gear was the banana shaker.
Favorite creative piece/project of 2023 (that you were a part of)? (Be specific. Make a short list if necessary.)
I really enjoyed making the music video for “Tracemaker.” It was basically a big party and I think everyone involved had a great time. Sarah Eiseman and Andy Deluca did a tremendous job on the video and working with them felt effortless.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
I have to say seeing The Black Angels joined on stage by The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols at Levitation was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m glad we were there to witness it.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I do everything on Instagram. We are working on having a few tracks from the album remixed and I have been using Instagram to connect with people.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
We played SXSW, Levitation, Daze in The City (Desert Daze), Freakout Fest, Austin Psych Fest, toured with The Black Angels, Dandy Warhols, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The album also peaked at #23 on the college radio chart. We’re proud of everything we did this year and 2024 will be even bigger.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
LA is always fun; we had a blast there during Daze In The City. Looking forward to being back there on February 8th.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Currently the biggest thing we’re looking forward to is our Europe tour through April and May. It will be our first time there with DAIISTAR and we’re all very excited about it.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Evolving.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “I Know Nothing At All” and “Pressure Cooker Remix [Ft. Mannequin Pussy]” and what is your perception/perspective on the song(s) now?
I’m stoked that you’re asking me to talk about these two specific songs because I feel like they represent two sides of songwriting that I’m most interested in and that I’m often trying to blend—the very guitar-heavy alt rock side and then the more out-there groovy beat-driven side. “I Know Nothing At All” is a song where I was aiming for a very classic kind of guitar pop songwriting, and then the fun came from layering on as much distortion and noise over it as possible without losing the hooks. I think that’s been the main Dazy formula from the jump and it feels really dialed-in on that song. And then the “Pressure Cooker” remix was exciting because it was a chance to show off this whole other thing that I want to dive into, which is dancier and more focused on the rhythms than the guitars. When I started working on it, I tried to really limit the amount of guitars I sampled from the original, and it was fun to use them in unexpected ways—for instance, taking one tiny chop of a pick slide and turning it into a completely different sound effect. Ian (Militarie Gun) and I were also very lucky to have Marissa from Mannequin Pussy sing on the remix and it was so exciting to get sent a big file of her parts and just go wild arranging everything.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
Probably a bunch of samples I have from a SP-1200 drum machine. It’s become my go-to for snares and kicks—the sounds have this way of feeling classic but also modern all at once.

I’m really proud of the songs you had me dig into, and also my most recent single “Forced Perspective.” I also sang a lot of the harmonies on the Militarie Gun LP, Life Under The Gun, and it’s really cool to have been a part of that album. There are some other things I worked on in 2023 that I’m super excited about too but I’m gonna have to just annoyingly tease them because they’re not out yet…
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
Hmm my favorite music of the year was probably a tie between the MG record and Golden Apples’ Bananasugarfire. My favorite live was show was seeing Angel Du$t every night when we went on tour with them. My favorite book was Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die, which is a big photo book about punk art. My favorite movie was Maestro. And my favorite TV series was Succession.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I guess I mostly appreciate the way social media can help you connect with other artists that you rock with, even if it’s just as simple as being a conduit for communicating some mutual admiration. As far as people who inspire me and I like bouncing ideas around with: Ian from Militarie Gun is one of my favorite people to talk about music with and he always pushes me, and this year I got to work with Ryan Hemsworth on “Forced Perspective” and it’s been really fun to get to know him and learn all kinds of things while collaborating him. Honestly, I’m really lucky to have a lot of friends who make music that I genuinely love and so many of them put out great music this year (Militarie Gun, Golden Apples, MSPAINT, Bodysync, Steve Marino, Graham Hunt, Pony, 9Million, lots more…)
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
I sound like a broken record but I really think “Forced Perspective” is one of the best songs I’ve ever written… But in general, I’m just really proud that I managed to play a ton of shows this year and put out a bunch of music and have a bunch more in the works.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
Played Chicago three times this year and all three times were really fun. Love Chicago!
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Making lots of new music and hopefully taking some of it in some unexpected directions.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Absorption.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Puppet” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
The melody and chords and flow of Puppet was born around a campfire in Alaska. The song was chill and fun but nothing crazy. Later on it became the most energetic rambunctious song and the finale of my opening set with The 1975. I’ve never had a song pull an energetic 180 like that.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
Anything made by teenage engineering, but I have a lot of fun with their magical radio OB4. I loop the radio and sing over it.
Favorite creative piece/project of 2023 (that you were a part of)? (Be specific. Make a short list if necessary.)
I helped build an octagonal ceremony space with Sage Stoneman and a group of awesome people in Mississippi. We used only natural materials from the earth; clay , sand , pine needles , wood, and water from the pond.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
I got really into Durutti Column this year. I also rediscovered Laura Nyro. I’m currently reading “stories of your life” by Ted Chiang which I’m loving.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I get pretty bored of the current templates online, they feel restrictive, but I would like to start a blog to dump ideas and have chats.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Through therapy I feel like I finally know what it means to be a friend to myself and not make life harder than it already is.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
New Orleans! Lots of dancing.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Finishing and performing my debut album…
- Dosser – “Glazed Over” (interview below)

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Noisy.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Glazed Over” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
I wrote the song to counter the more melancholic songs that we tended to write at that point in time. The tempo was upbeat and the chords themselves were more in a major key. But the funny part is the lyrics turned out to be super depressive. I like listening back now and hearing the total juxtaposition of how upbeat the music is compared to how depressing the lyrics are. Also, super fun to play live!
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
Oh man, that’s a loaded question for me (the resident gearhead of the band). I’d have to say the Zvex Fuzz Factory guitar pedal. I’d you listen to our music is layered with different fuzz pedals and the Fuzz Factory has to be my favorite right now.

We just finished recording two new singles with producer Jon Markson of Drug Church fame and it may just be our best work yet.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
Year Of The Knife put out the best heavy album and EP this year for sure. And I’m super stoked on MX Lonely and their new EP!
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I write a lot of music outside of Dosser and make short videos of loops and small pieces of work that I have an Instagram page dedicated too. I find I make a lot of connections with other artists through it.What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Writing and recording new music for Dosser. On a more personal note, my partner and I foster animals from local shelters and help rehabilitate dogs, so we were thankful we got to help so many animals this year!
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
We toured down to Florida to play Fest. We had a great time and made some fond memories for sure.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Touring in new cities!

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Philippe Andre: Vibrant.
Adam Sabolick: Sparkly.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Edge To Edge,” “Know It All,” “Pleasure” and “Sugary Plum” and what is your perception/perspective on the songs now?
Philippe: The world we were creating was fresh, nothing had come before so everything had a mystique to the process. In hindsight, there’s a mix of curiosity in how the songs would sound if we recorded them currently after a year and some of taking those songs to a live environment and finding a new life. A few other songs, “Pleasure” and “Meadows,” I wouldn’t know how to recreate them now even if we tried so they still have a uniqueness to them.
Adam: Firstly, I second what Philippe is saying about the live environment. But being that we can’t really change that now, I’m equally happy to serve something up special at the live shows. With this body of work though, when we worked on the songs we tried to never really overthink or over work anything. Stay inspired and keep the ball rolling. I’m the type of person that wants to see proof of my labor lol… Then share it with as many people as possible. We worked on these songs one after another from 2020-2021 and didn’t really know what they would turn into, so kinda funny how one day in late summer 2022 I realized we were sitting on an EP. After that everything happened really quick – the EP title, track listing, artwork, and the indie label Hit the North Records deciding to back the release. When I reflect on these songs, and the processes and events that have occurred up until now, I have a very optimistic perspective of them. Not only have we laid an unapologetic and honest ground to build upon, but we have created so many meaningful relationships with fans, venues, artists, and the like. And as we continue writing new music, it’s fun to be able to draw connections and references back to these songs and push the sound in directions we would have never thought of a few years ago. Currently, these songs kinda feel like some type of home base that will continue finding and defining an audience for us while we start strategizing our next releases… but yeah, favorite thing — stay inspired and keep the ball rolling.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
Philippe: Well, I recently moved into a new home studio in Costa Mesa in September; so, dialing in the room, adding acoustic treatment, vibe, color and being able to have much more space to work with has been super inspiring. From an engineering perspective, being in an environment where I could trust my decisions on mixing and tone shaping has been incredible.
Adam: Philippe’s new studio space is definitely inspiring. There’s this setting on the Roland JV-1080 that’s called ‘Tutti.’ If I remember, it’s like a voice pad sound. We stumbled across it at the perfect time, plus it has a super cute name. I also spent the year falling in love with ’80s and ‘90s Squire Supersonics (borrowed a friend’s for the first part of the year before I found one of my own). They come in these sparkle colors that I love and have a super unique shape and upside-down headstock. Sparkly. The sound is a little middle of the road, oftentimes people replace the pickups. I’m in the middle of putting double lipstick humbuckers on mine to model it after a Danelectro. Twangy and powerful is the goal.
Favorite creative piece/project of 2023 (that you were a part of)? (Be specific. Make a short list if necessary.)
Philippe: Working on Light Split Sparkle (Expanded) was super fun, time had passed since the initial release and vinyl master, we had b sides to address as well as a remaster for vinyl and digital. That felt more real to me where the first iteration was a bit more of a “just go with it” type of energy. I’ve loved every artist I’ve got to produce on the side as well: The Strayngers, Taupe, Tam, Ark Identity and Ivy Hallow; both of which will be releasing in 2024. Lastly, I’m super pumped on the new Double Wish material and a solo project that was the genesis of producing in the first place.
Adam: Recording new Double Wish music and doing the Double Wish Light Split Sparkle cycle. This includes so many collaborations and other artists we’ve worked with. Shout outs to Hit The North Records, Neon Bloodbath Records, Lauryn Alvarez and her amazing photography, Ronny K’s work on the “Pleasure” video, Ed Diven and his vision for the “Blue Dream Baby” music video (seriously, love this video), Justin Hopkins’ video for “Sugary Plum,” Ryan Contreras and our collaborative work on the “Edge to Edge” video… so many collaborations to be proud of, not to mention all the amazing shows and artists we played with in 2023.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
Philippe: Melody’s Echo Chamber live was super exciting for me as I’ve never caught her, not to mention some of her live band consists of members from Dungen. Show wise, I’ve been loving the Curse from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie.
Adam: Kurupi’s Late Night Car Ride EP, Couch Prints’ album Waterfall (Rebirth), watching the band Sego play in the round in a warehouse in DTLA, watching our buds Ridgeway play in front of 1400 people… Also shout out to our buds Anton and Jack from Beach Fossils who invited the Double Wish gang out to their sold-out Anaheim show. That night literally felt like heaven. Everyone we love in one place celebrating the thing we all love the most… Many, many more, but these are few.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
Philippe: I mostly only use Instagram for myself to be honest. I’m not a huge fan of social media in the sense of selling myself or my abilities. I understand its relevance and importance, but it can also be quite a spiral of emotion when inevitably you start reading into metrics and mind games about imposter syndrome. I need to lean into others more I suppose for my own project, but I have a few people I like to show a piece of music to. It’s always revealing when you read your own reactions to how you think the music is being perceived by others; that can be enlightening to the process. It’s always horrible to try and actually get useful feedback personally, most times I’ll just ignore opinions as I trust my own vision but that process can make things jump out at you that you don’t notice when someone else is around in the same room. I’d imagine it’s some quantum observer effect ripping through creative space time. Who knows.
Adam: Kinda obviously but it’s gotta be a combination of IG and Spotify. Both platforms have been places for connecting with and discovering music, artists, and community. Both Kurupi and Couch Prints, the artist I mentioned above, I found on Spotify and was able to connect with them in a more personal way on IG. However, I really enjoy having direct and real connections with our friends and fans, so as fun as it is to use these platforms in tandem, nothing beats meeting people IRL and sharing your love for what inspires you. It’s a bit harder to directly connect with people on Spotify, but regardless, this year I’ve found so much good new music and rad people on these platforms. In terms of people in my life, I think it’s for sure each other as a band, and then people throughout the various communities we are part of and contribute to from other bands, venues, promoters, artists… sometimes it feels like everything is connected in direct and abstract ways. I love that energy. It’s inspiring.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Philippe: Continuing to exist by producing and recording music as a means of income, it’s tight and at times scary but I think that’s where the most exciting things happen. Also taking a big risk on moving into a new home and studio.
Adam: Light Split Sparkle EP cycle and all the shows, media, and content that surround it. The collaborations with labels that brought this music to the public. Also, all the new music that we have worked on that is not released yet.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
Philippe: I honestly didn’t do much traveling this year physically but I’ll say using techniques for going inward; exploring the space between reality and the fascination that is the uap ufo phenomenon is enough to make me feel I’ve been all over the universe and back.
Adam: Possibly Genghis Cohen, the Chinese restaurant/venue in Los Angeles. We played a super fun show there and enjoyed a massive family meal beforehand. Love the vibe.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Philippe: Spending the year in this new studio environment, new music, more self-exploration and solo creation, thriving over surviving. Putting more time into getting out of my head and deeper into self-introspection, which sounds like a paradox; probably is but I love it.
Adam: Sharing new Double Wish music, playing good shows, and connecting with new listeners.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Wild.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Lost Cowboy” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
The day “Lost Cowboy” was written is to this day my favorite writing session I’ve ever been in. I wrote it with Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Jay Flew, and I just remember us laughing the whole time. The writing came so naturally, nothing felt forced at all, and that just really allowed me to get everything off my chest and say what I had been meaning to without putting any pressure on it, which is why I think this is still one of my favorite songs I’ve written so far.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
My writing essentials are always my notebook, a black pen and an acoustic guitar.

– The self-titled Zach Bryan album.
– The Noah Kahan collaboration with Kacey Musgraves on his song ‘She Calls Me Back.’
– The acoustic duet I did with Corey Harper on his song ‘Pink Razor.’
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
I got to see Noah Kahan play live at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville and it was my favorite show I’ve ever seen live. He’s such a big inspiration for me and seeing him live was honestly a life changing experience for me.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
Instagram and Tiktok are definitely my main social media platforms. To me, it feels like it’s easier to reach more new people on Tiktok whereas on Instagram I find it easier to connect with my followers and interact more closely with them. I feel really lucky that I’ve got a really supportive team that I can lean on if I ever feel burnt out or stuck for content ideas.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
It’s always been one of my biggest dreams to hear one of my songs play on the radio, so it’s crazy to think that this year that dream came true. I didn’t think that I would get to experience that this early on in my career, so just feel incredibly grateful that I reached that milestone in 2023. It’s so surreal for me to think that my song ‘Summer’ which I wrote when I was sixteen, debuted in the 150 German Charts. Especially since I grew up in Germany, that meant the world to me.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
I went to Nashville for the first time this year to write, and I absolutely fell in love with it. I loved it so much that I’m actually going to be going back for another writing trip in January, and I’m also going to play my first US show on the 16th of January while I’m there, which feels so surreal to even be saying. So I would definitely say Nashville was my favorite place I’ve visited last year.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
I’ve been working on a really exciting project that I cannot wait to share with everyone in 2024. I’m really looking forward to giving people more of an insight into my world & who I am as an artist.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?

What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Falling Back To You” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
I wrote “Falling Back To You” half way through making my debut album (which is out this spring) and I loved it, but it didn’t seem to fit with the theme or sound of the album so I decided to release it early. I programmed the drums and bass line in a few hours and it came together really easily (which isn’t always the case!) it’s fun, and has a great groove and it feels freeing when I play it!
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
I got a new Roland Gaia synth for my live show which has been fun to play around with. It’s pretty small and inexpensive for an analogue synth and has some great sounds that mimic the Juno 60 and Jupiter 8 pretty well!

I released a new single “Personal” in December, and it will be my last release before my album campaign starts this year. For me it was the perfect song to end a particular era of my music, and get my fans excited for what’s to come in the next few months. I also finished my debut album last year which has been one of the most creatively fulfilling and euphoric periods of my musical life so far. It’s been a long time coming!!

I know with Instagram I’m talking to my fans, which feels good, but seems harder to reach new ears. Tiktok has been great for me and has helped me build a following through drumming (I started out in music as a drummer).
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Building a great team to help get my music out to the world. Filming 12 music videos for $2000. Putting together an awesome live show (if I do say so myself ) …and keeping my dog from eating the entire house.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
LA! I love LA and am moving over there in April this year. My boyfriend and I did a test run over the summer, and I am so excited to make it my home and collaborate with some great writers and producers!

What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “All We Are” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
“All We Are” was my first time really leaning into the industrial genre. When I was writing the song in fall 2020, I was listening to a lot of Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly and binge-watching ‘The Knick’ which inspired the lyrics. Listening back, I would’ve liked to include more musique concréte in the percussion like we’re doing now for the debut record.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
It’s a tie between my air fryer and my Prophet 6.
Favorite creative piece/project of 2023 (that you were a part of)?
This one, because it helps me process my silly little life in the bigger context of the world. I’ve been going through some major changes, and so has the world, since the initial COVID lockdown so it’s been a very cathartic outlet. A close second was making my first Weeping Icon record with Martin Bisi. I joined in spring 2022, and it’s my first time being a noise person in a band.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
Music-wise, gobbinjr (https://gobbinjr.bandcamp.com/music), a local Brooklyn artist who I mixed at The Broadway in November. TV-wise, ‘The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula’ is absolutely addicting.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I’m in my hustle era, so I can’t help but be most influenced by my work which is doing sound at various venues in NYC. I work in mostly queer spaces, so I feed off the beautiful community, the gender play, and the experimentation with format and performance. Late club nights remind me how important it is to get lost in a rhythmic trance for hours and hours and not think so much, and with earlier live band nights I can witness what works and what doesn’t. When I’m not doing A/V work in museums, I usually find myself lurking around the paintings of 20th century impressionists and surrealists which will definitely be influencing the next album artwork.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Getting Suzanne Ciani’s number after working with her at MoMA… still too scared to text her!
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
Hands down it was Brighton, England to play Great Escape Fest. My favorite city in England. We had the pleasure of staying with the founder of STOMP, Fraser Morrison, and he got us listed for The Pretenders who I never thought I’d see live. Hanging with our friends CLT DRP and seeing them perform for the first time was also memorable. To top it all off, my friends and collaborators — video artist Peter Young and stylist Carlin Rollenhagen — both built a vacation around the festival so it was all very magical.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Putting the finishing touches on our debut LP and figuring out a release plan! Oh, and finally taking a proper vacation to Berlin.

Fruitful.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Runner’s High,” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
I loved how naturally the song came together. Working with collaborators Ryan Jones and Bastian Testori, the production arrangement was seamless, making the recording session for final vocals fun and motivating. “Runner’s High” felt like a song I needed to write in order to keep myself going, and it’s been inspiring to see “Runner’s High” take that same role of motivation for listeners since the release.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
Unironically I would say the small Focusrite interface that I’ve had for almost 7 years now (since I first started recording and producing my own music). Now I have some fancier gear / nicer mics and plug-ins, but I think people underestimate how much you can achieve with very inexpensive equipment. Nice gear is so inspiring to experiment with, but at the end of the day, it’s not about the gear, it’s about who’s using it and how they choose to use it. And I loved traveling with that interface and a mic in my backpack. Being able to record on the go helped me write some of my favorite new songs.
Favorite creative piece/project of 2023 (that you were a part of)? (Be specific. Make a short list if necessary.)
This year I was so focused on the EP, that I would have to say the process of sharing those six songs on the TO BE NAMED BY THE PEOPLE EP was my favorite. I also loved being a part of creating music for Film + TV. Some of those songs have landed in libraries for Paramount and Fox Entertainment Music or in indie films, and I have a blast making music intended to tell a visual story.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
I read bits of The Creative Act by Rick Rubin this year. It’s a very light read text-wise. But I found picking up the book every now and then and reading a chapter, served as a good way to take my creative brain from “stuck” to “unstuck” and get the creative wheels spinning.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections?
TikTok generally. I love absorbing new tricks or information from people that I never would have run into on my own.
Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I’d say Will Brown and Pele, who have been a part of my live band for many years; they know me and the music so well. And collaborators like Jae Luna and So Wylie – I love continuing that co-production collaborative relationship, and they make me such a better artist.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
I got my first plaque with a Gold record in Australia for a song called “Above the Clouds,” which I made with a group called SýDE. That really blew my mind, and I still don’t think has set in yet. 8-year-old Olivia would freak out if she knew that I’d have a gold record on my wall.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
I spent some time writing new music in Poland this year outside of Warsaw, in a town called Burdag. The area was so peaceful, the people were very kind, and I felt inspired and centered during my time there.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Going for it. I think I feel just ready to “do” in 2024, and not hold onto everything so tightly or take myself too seriously. Just grateful for another year I get to wake up and “do the thing” that is making and sharing music.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Movie.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Reno Nevada, January 2020” and what is your perception/perspective on the song(s) now?
I really like the part towards the end that’s sort of like a bridge (“and every letter that I wrote to you in a song”). Love how it repeats, and the layers just keep building on top of each other. Recording that and watching it all come together was so cool, it was like building a house or a nice Lego set.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
I’ve been pretty hesitant to use fuzz in the past but for this album I was recommended a russian Big Muff and I fell in love with using it on bass especially, now I use it all the time. Also had fun using the Bananana Effects Mandala pedal as a glitchy noise maker (you can hear it at the end of “Self Betterment” and the end of “Anymore”). Got really into the album Long Season by Fishmans. It came out in 1996 but I heard it for the first time this year. It’s an album that’s just one really long song. I think it’s so beautiful and mysterious sounding.
I read Brian Wilson and Jaromir Jagr’s autobiography this year as well. Love to learn about my heroes, also discovered that I just really like biographies, especially of the “auto” persuasion.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I’m a Twitter enjoyer for better or for worse. Kinda have a hard time making photo/video content but I’m pretty good at being funny through text. Plus it’s definitely the most unadulterated platform, all the other ones are too algorithmic.
Honestly, I don’t really bounce my ideas off anyone haha. I just bring my songs to my bandmates and tell them what I want them to play. I’m open to changes and alterations but I wouldn’t exactly describe it as a collaborative process
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
Released an album and an EP and toured the UK for the first time! Also renovated my house that I purchased as condemned property to a livable degree, learned how to roller blade and shoot a hockey puck.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
Probably London or Brighton. The London venue (Shacklewell Arms) was so cozy, and the show was lit. I went to a really cool installation art spot called God’s Junkyard. Brighton is cool because it’s on the beach and there’s a massive boardwalk with an arcade and you can play “penny pushers” and eat these special donuts.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
I’m trying to organize a full album cover of Third Eye Blind’s first album – we’re covering “The Background”. I hope it all works out and is well received but I’m going to have a fun time with it regardless. Keep an eye out.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Unhinged.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Drag Your Feet” and “TWENTYSOMETHING” and what is your perception/perspective on the songs now?
My favorite thing about the process for “TWENTYSOMETHING” was just the unabashed fun we had in the studio. We wanted it to be messy and not overthink it, and it really allowed us to just let go. Looking back on the song now, I still feel that fun and freedom when I hear it, but as I’ve moved into my late twenties, I’m realizing how much of that feeling just stays with you. I really felt like I was in a phase of chaos and trying to figure my life out, but I’ve learned how much it’s not a phase. There are chaotic, shitty moments and also beautiful moments and they’re all interwoven and there’s a sense of duality in that, where if you can make space for all of it, you’re going to have a lot of beautiful experiences.
For “Drag Your Feet,” my favorite thing about that process was getting to work with an entirely new group of people and see what they brought out in me. It was the first song I worked on with this particular production team, and they were really pushing me to lean into my voice and belt and explore those dynamics. I don’t always just let it rip vocally and it was fun to do that on the bridge of this song. As far as my perspective now goes, I have mixed feelings about where I was at when I wrote it. I love the song – that’s not a question – but I’ve gone through some difficult experiences emotionally that have made me question the perspective I had when I wrote this song. Sure, dragging something out past its expiration date is never good. But cutting something off before you get to see where it goes also sucks. Maybe there’s not really a right way to go about it.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
I’m really not much of a gearhead – when I discover something that is really cool that I love and it helps me create in the way I want to, it’s exciting – but I don’t always seek it out. To be honest, my favorite piece of gear I used this year was my roommate’s Daisy Rock guitars. They are old, they’re not fancy, and they’re just guitars. But we used them in the writing and recording process for the EP we made under our new band Desperate Hauswives, and because it’s a silly, flower-shaped guitar, it made me lose my pretensions and just have fun and get bratty and lean into the energy of that project. I wasn’t obsessing over tone; I was just having a blast. I need more of that energy in my creative process.

I had the opportunity to really expand my creativity in 2023 and go deep with not only music but with visual art and videomaking/creative directing as well. I finished my first album as talker, which will come out this year, toured, played SXSW, and put together a residency, but I also got to help my friends with their videos and make some for myself as well. I directed & produced several music videos, art directed a photoshoot, and traveled to Rome to produce the social content for my friend’s album. My best friend and I also started a punk band called Desperate Hauswives, with songs inspired by the insane plotlines from the show Desperate Housewives. There were moments where I felt like I wasn’t doing enough strictly for talker, but in reality, I was creating a TON and learning so much.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
Such a tough question! According to Spotify my top artist of the year was Caroline Polachek and that tracks – her album from this year was definitely my favorite record and the one I came back to the most. I saw her play The Shrine in the spring and the show was amazing, but also, she is just such an inspiration for sticking to your passion and your craft and to just keep going, because eventually the right people are going to get it.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
Lately I’ve had a pretty negative relationship with social media, so I’m mixed about it right now, but I find it easiest to connect meaningfully with other artists on Instagram. But as far as discovering music and comedy, I tend to get joy out of TikTok in a way that actually doesn’t make me miserable afterwards. I turn to my best friends for creative inspiration a lot. I’m really lucky to have a friend group made up of other musicians and filmmakers, and one of my friends and I kept referring to “art girl autumn” last fall – and now it’s “art girl winter” for the New Year – he’s a dude but an honorary art girl. But yeah, just creating and being inspired and doing things just because we want to.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
I finished my record. It took a long time and I battled with it in my brain for months. But I finished it.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
Rome, especially because I got to live there for a few weeks and meet people and make art there. It was special.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
This is the first New Year in a really long time where I honestly don’t have a lot of concrete plans. I know stuff will come together, but I don’t have a lot on the books. I know I’m releasing a lot of singles and ultimately my debut album later this year – so I’m obviously excited for that. I know I will end up making a bunch of videos and touring and creating and have a lot of beautiful moments. But right now, I’m trying to control it less – I learned a lot in 2023 about not having any control and accepting that. I’m a little anxious, but also really excited to just take everything as it comes and be totally open to all the unexpected opportunities and synchronicities that come my way.

Transformative.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Such is Life” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
“Such is Life” was recorded in the middle of the lockdown in a basement studio. In a way that song represents our resolution and perseverance through that challenging time. It’s wild that something we recorded in a DIY setting has gone on to become one of our most popular songs with over a million streams.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
My favorite creative tool is my mind but I’m also a huge fan of these foldable carts we use to haul heavy ass gear around.

Teen Mortgage is our favorite project that we’re in and dominates much of our time and creative energy.

Social media and online platforms are valuable tools that have allowed us to meet people internationally. We utilize most of the popular apps and they’ve undoubtedly opened doors for us in a way not possible just a few decades ago. Still nothing beats the depth of connections made through face-to-face interaction, performing, going to shows and being a present member of the music community.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
I remember returning from our first full US tour in 2022, happy that our single, “Tuning In,” had hit 100k streams and we had about 20k monthly listeners. We realized things were about to change early in the morning on January 15, 2023. BBC6’s Instagram page tagged us in a reel cut from Iggy Pop’s Confidential Show saying, “These guys have got it going on. Teen Mortgage – Tuning In.” Flash forward a couple of months, our streams were in the millions with over a quarter million monthly listeners. We were touring in support of some of our favorite legendary acts like Alkaline Trio to Red Fang and OFF! We’d grown from a two-piece DIY operation to a full team with management, booking, merchandise and distribution composed of the most amazing people we could have hoped to work with. What I’m most proud of is that this has been accomplished on the merit of our art and work ethic without the financial support and assets of a commercial record deal.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
We’ve traveled all across North America, the UK and Ireland. I can’t name a singular place as my favorite since they all have unique charms. That being said, London really turned up in a big way for our first headline performance in their city with iDestroy and Jools. That was one of those cathartic shows that make you realize the music we’re making has become something truly significant to so many people.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
We’re making our vinyl premiere in January with a self-titled LP through King Pizza Records. This release will encompass our complete King Pizza discography including both Life/Death and SMOKED EPs, along with every single and several unreleased tracks. We are currently set to embark on several headlining North American tours culminating with Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas. Then it’s onto Europe for the days leading up to a six-date arena tour supporting The Smashing Pumpkins & Weezer throughout the UK and Ireland.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?
Busy.
What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “90 in November” and what is your perception/perspective on the song now?
Recording a song about Texas while we were secluded in the East Texan countryside was a really cool experience. When I was tracking my guitar, I had the back door open and there was a cow standing 15 feet away from me on the other side of the fence. She definitely helped me get in the headspace.
The song to me now feels very innocent, which is a good thing! I wanted it to be forever young and carefree, and that’s how it makes me feel still.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
I’m really not a gear head at all but we did use an Otomatone on the new album which was pretty fun. It makes a really annoying and shrill sound so obviously we had to have it on there.
Favorite creative piece/project 2023 (that you were a part of)? (Be specific. Make a short list if necessary.)
I got to sing harmonies on the new Zoomdweeby album and I love the way it came out. Victor is super talented, and it was fun to work on something out of my usual wheelhouse.
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
I watched Picnic At Hanging Rock for the first time this year and it’s easily in my top three favorite movies now. I’m usually not a fan of old movies (I know, I know…) but this one was really captivating. It’s suspenseful, poetic, dreamy, and the aesthetic is so pleasing.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
I don’t have a favorite platform for band stuff because I mostly use social media for sending memes to my friends… I appreciate that social media makes it possible for fans to get to know you and it’s a good tool for community building, but otherwise it gives me anxiety. Sometimes I don’t want to be perceived at all but feel like I don’t have a choice if I want to make music. It’s a double-edged sword for sure.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
We finished our second album and are really proud of it. It feels like a step in a new direction, and I’m excited to open new doors as a musician. On a more personal note, I’ve really been diving into my intuition and learning to trust myself. It’s really just muscle you can strengthen over time if you keep using it.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
We got to go to some really cool places on the last two tours of this year, but the Grand Canyon might have been the most beautiful. It was a few hours out of the way but so worth it.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Really looking forward to sharing this new album with the world! Excited to get back on the road and fingers crossed we get to go abroad. Feeling very blessed to be making music with my friends. It’s truly a dream come true.

How would you describe 2023 with a single word?

What was your favorite thing about the writing/recording process of “Spinning” and what is your perception/perspective on the song(s) now?
My favorite part of recording it was finally seeing it fleshed out to its full potential. I originally wrote/recorded/produced it for my solo project called Push Pop back in 2019, but my production skills are fairly amateur so I loved seeing it come to life when we recorded it in LA this past summer.
What was your favorite piece of gear or creative tool you used in 2023?
My Stratocaster <3 I got it for myself around the holidays because I’d been thinking about it ever since I got to play on one when we recorded our debut album at the beginning of December. I worked hard this year and don’t buy that many things for myself so I indulged… and so happy I did.
Favorite creative piece/project of 2023 (that you were a part of)? (Be specific. Make a short list if necessary.)
We learned a lot of new songs this year as a band so it’s hard to choose. Kevin and I normally write songs separately but he’s been sending me some demos that he had asked me to throw down on, which feels great and a lot more collaborative. I’ve also been writing some electro-pop songs that I’d love to put on another potential Push Pop record. We’ll see!
What was your favorite piece of music/live show/movie/book/series discovery of 2023?
I can’t stop listening to the album “Long Distance” by the band Ivy. A friend had sent me a song off of it earlier this year but I didn’t listen to the whole album until recently when I heard another song off that record in the movie “Shallow Hal” with Jack Black. So hilarious that that’s what pushed me to listen to the whole thing.
What is your favorite online platform/social media stream for your creative pursuits and connections? Who are the people in your life that you most often turn to for creative inspiration and to bounce ideas off of?
Instagram is definitely how I share creative pursuits. I don’t use much else. Kevin is definitely my main person who I bounce ideas off of but I’ll occasionally send demos to other friends in the local music scene.
What did you accomplish in 2023 that you’re most proud of?
It’s hard to think of just one because so much good has happened this year. It would have to be our two week long tour in the southwest with Tanukichan. This was our band’s first ever big tour, not counting our 3-day stint on the east coast last summer. I’m more specifically proud of how me, Kevin, and Mitch drove 30 hours from Indiana to San Luis Obispo to start the tour. We all got to see so much we’d never seen before and got to know the Tanukichan band really well. We were super honored that we got asked to be their direct support.
What was your favorite place you visited in 2023?
That’s a tough one since I got to go to so many cool places this year. I’m gonna have to say San Luis Obispo and just California in general. That was our first city we played in with Tanukichan and it was just so beautiful. None of us wanted to leave California.
What are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Releasing our debut full length album!!!
